A family
Runs from danger and,
Finding no door open,
Climbs in through the window.
Once inside, they behave as all
The other families do:
Looking for food,
A place to lay their heads,
Jobs to afford those necessities
And maybe set a little aside for the children.
They simply want a place for themselves,
But always it hangs over their heads:
That they came in through the window
Because those inside
Had already locked
The door.
So they hope,
Or pray if that is their disposition,
That they won't be noticed. All the while,
The landlord cuts the heat in winter,
Ignores the repairs the tenants call in,
Raising the rent to squeeze every drop from
Those who live there,
Then pointing the finger at
The families
Who climbed in through the window,
As if they are the ones profiting from
The landlord's misdeeds.
And the cycle turns,
Landlord bleeding tenants
While claiming some of them are to blame
For the others' injury,
Laughing at the money they make,
The power they accumulate
While the powerless receive the blame that should belong to the powerful.
And our family
Hunkers down,
Going about their lives,
Waiting for something
That might
Or might
Not be
Around the corner.
